A Superhero Turned Super Charitable

December 13, 2018

Deadpool puts its box office success to good use by donating proceeds to the charity Fudge Cancer.

Every once in a while, a superhero has such power that it can affect people off screen. A perfect example – Deadpool. The R rated superhero, played by Ryan Reynolds, is back to fight back while giving back to charity. The movie Deadpool 2 brought in nearly $735 million this summer, which was almost as much as the original.

While the execs have been begging for a PG-13 version of the film for years, Reynolds had flat out denied the prospects, until now. The Washington Post shared,  “Fox has been asking for a PG-13 basically since the start in 2006,” Reynolds told Deadline on Monday. “I’ve said ‘no’ since 2006. Now, this one time, I said ‘yes’ on two conditions. First, a portion of the proceeds had to go to charity. Second, I wanted to kidnap Fred Savage. The second condition took some explaining.”

So, on December 12th through Christmas Eve, “Once Upon a Deadpool” will be released in theaters. $1 for every ticket sold will go towards a campaign called “Fudge Cancer.” This isn’t the first time the franchise has used their popularity and plotline for good. As Men’s Health penned, “Reynolds has used the Deadpool character — who himself is a cancer survivor — to support those battling illness. Last February, the actor partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Children’s Wish to invite kids with cancer to the set of Deadpool 2.”

Now, the violence and profanity have been toned down and more goodwill has been added. The film has now been cut to be in the point of new of the character portrayed by Fred Savage. “Savage portrayed the grandson being read the storybook tale in 1987′s “The Princess Bride”; in the new scenes in “Once Upon a Deadpool,” Reynolds will reportedly read his Deadpool adventure to the adult Savage in the same childhood bed.” So, if you want to be entertained and feel like you’re helping sick kids – head to the theaters, grab some popcorn and watch “Once Upon a Deadpool.”
