The literary and television phenomenon “Game of Thrones” is currently in its final season, and this week, it made the news for more than just its plot. Fans quickly reacted to an accidental coffee cup that was left on set at the beginning of the season’s fourth episode.
The cup appears on an elegant-looking table during a feast scene, in front of one of the show’s pivotal characters, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). It goes without saying that the internet had a good time making jokes.
HBO took the high road, deciding to join in on the fun. A day after the episode aired, the official Game of Thrones twitter account tweeted, “The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. #Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea.”
The choice to play it off this way was probably smart, and so was the choice to digitally remove the cup from the episode. Hardcore fans of the show are disappointed that the creators made such a silly mistake, but over a small detail like this, viewership certainly won’t take a hit.
