Once upon a time before iTunes, Pandora and Amazon, there were record stores and by the 1990s there were mega-record stores. For anyone visiting Manhattan from the ‘70s – ‘90s, Tower Records was a must see. The world’s biggest and best record store nestled in NYU’s campus just off St. Mark’s Place. It was the heart and soul and some say, the most powerful force in the music industry. There was Virgin and HMV, but Tower Records was the undisputed leader. In 1999 Tower made over $1 billion in sales, but by 2006, this Goliath’s spectacular story ended in bankruptcy. Let this be a warning, Apple and Google. All Things Must Pass is now showing and will turn up on pay-per-view before you know it.
