An Anchor’s Suspension

October 14, 2016

In the first weekday broadcast since an incrementing audio was leaked of Donald Trump making lewd comments with Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush, NBC’s TODAY show stuck to minimal facts addressing Bush’s role in the incident while deciding what to do with their employee’s involvement. Bush, who now co-hosts the third hour of NBC’s TODAY morning show, was rumored to make an on-air apology (again), but news broke prior to his expected apology that he had been suspended indefinitely and pending further review. TODAY Senior Vice President Noah Oppenheim explained, “there is simply no excuse for Billy’s language and behavior on that tape.” At the top of the morning show’s 9 o’clock hour, co-hosts Al Roker and Tamron Hall, shortly addressed Bush’s absence from his usual seat. “As you can see Billy Bush is not joining us today. As you’re probably aware, he’s part of Access Hollywood’s taping with Donald Trump that’s been in the news all weekend,” Roker stated. NBC, which owns Access Hollywood, feels this controversial audio tape is a direct negative perception of the television network and what it stands for. Bush’s suspension proves all actions have consequences and we are never unplugged.
