Andrea Jenkins, a black transgender activist, was elected to the Minneapolis City Council. A Hispanic woman won the mayor’s race in Topeka, Kansas. A Sikh man was elected mayor in Hoboken, New Jersey. Latina, Vietnamese and transgender female candidates won state legislative races. If this election’s results weren’t an indicator of the American people’s rebellion against President Trump, we’re not sure what is. “It was largely a suburban rebellion, where more moderate voters rejected Mr. Trump and embraced Democrats,” said a commentator. “A transgender Virginia politician has been elected to the state legislature, unseating one of the state’s longest serving and most socially conservative lawmakers.” As more and more Republican House members announce their retirements rather than run again, the victories could tilt the midterm playing field further toward Democrats by giving them a fundraising and recruitment advantage. The results could mean a new wave is coming and that the Democratic party could retake the House. The election took place while President Trump was oversea on a 13-day Asia trip and his Twitter account was mute. Tuesday night’s results should be a wake-up call for any Republicans who are pretending there’s not a political problem happening now that will most likely spill over into next year.
