As Heard On TV – Rock’s New Economy

artistsThere was a time when a rock star was “selling out” if he licensed his music for a TV commercial. Many of us remember the furor when the Beatles’ “Revolution” was used in a Nike spot. But now rock stars can’t license their music fast enough. A recent article in Rolling Stone details the trend which includes artist such as They Might Be Giants striking deals to create original music for over two dozen Dunkin’ Donuts spots. Artists realize that CD sales just don’t cut it anymore, so they have to find new ways to generate money. Though it’s great for the ad industry, we have to wonder what happens to talented music houses like Music for Picture when agencies keep turing to iTunes for their commercials?
