Another year of Madness has come and gone – and this year, it was the Virginia Cavaliers and the Baylor Bears that cut down the nets in the men’s and women’s tournaments, respectively.
The University of Virginia’s win marked its first national championship in program history, as they took down underdog Texas Tech 85-77 in an overtime thriller late Monday night. Virginia fans surely enjoyed this tournament much more than last year’s edition, in which they lost to 16-seeded University of Maryland Baltimore County in the first round.
On the women’s side, Baylor emerged victorious for the first time since 2012. They beat fellow-1-seed Notre Dame on Sunday night by a score of 82-81 in a game that also came down to the wire. Despite losing one of their stars, Lauren Cox, to injury earlier in the game, the Bears pulled through to take home the gold.
Unfortunately for the University of Connecticut, Geno Auriemma and the Huskies weren’t able to go all the way this year, falling to Notre Dame in the Final Four.
