Running back Rashard Mendenhall was the Pittsburgh Steelers’ first-round pick in 2008 and he rushed for over 1,000 yards in his second and third seasons with a career-high of 1,273 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2010. He went on to two Super Bowls and eventually signed with the Arizona Cardinals. To the surprise of many, the 26-year-old softly announced his retirement in a highly personal piece in the Huffington Post. We found this wonderful piece where si.com (Sports Illustrated) places Mendenhall’s explanation in context. If you’ve ever wondered what kinds of pressures young players face in the NFL or if you enjoy thinking about retirement, you may find this an enjoyable read.
