Move over, Alexa – iPhones and iPads are the latest devices causing people to fear for their privacy, as a teen discovered a unique FaceTime bug this week.
The fourteen-year-old boy was trying to set up a group call with his friends when he realized he could hear through his buddy’s microphone – even without the call ever being accepted. His mother attempted a variety of ways to contact Apple about this, and it wasn’t until over a week later that the company took action, temporarily removing the Group FaceTime feature.
Naturally, people expressed their collective concern over social media – and angry consumers aren’t the only problem facing Apple in the aftermath. Now, it sounds like there will be a legal investigation into the bug and Apple’s way of handling it.
The fear of our devices listening to our conversations is nothing new; we’ve all had those eerie moments where we find an ad that suspiciously pertains to a discussion we just had in person. But every event like this just furthers that fear, convincing many that very little separates their words and actions from the ears and eyes of…well, who knows.
Let’s face it, though – this is Apple we’re talking about. Most likely, they’ll survive.
