Fill Em’ Up!

November 30, 2017

Traveling can be a nightmare, especially around the holidays, with cancellations, delays, gate changes, lackluster customer service, long and slow-moving lines. In addition, airports now are making travelers overpay for snacks and water. The cardinal rule of traveling is to hydrate, but with the cost of water bottles steadily rising, it’s now too costly. Now more and more airports are installing bottle filling stations for all of those thirsty and health conscious travelers. “From an environmental perspective, we are able to reduce some volume of single-use plastic water bottles from going to the landfill,” said Scott Morrissey, senior director of sustainability for the Denver International Airport. “From an economic perspective, it helps to reduce both our landfill tipping fees as well as our recycling costs for those water bottles that are recycled.” The easy-to-use stations are also part of a crowd control effort. Bottle-filling stations will hopefully encourage travelers to bring their own water bottles, let’s not forget you can bring an empty water bottle through TSA. It’s a multi-layer effort to encourage travelers to reuse their empty water bottles at filling stations, recycle the empty bottles, and reduce congestion at both security checkpoints and convenient stores throughout populated airports. What’s next, sparkling water stations?
