Amazon and its Alexa technology have taken the world by storm, but Google’s counterpart, the Google Home, has earned a lot of recent attention.
At the beginning of November, Spotify and Google announced a partnership that would provide a free Google Home Mini device for subscribers to the Spotify Premium Family Plan. When the goal is to gain product awareness, there aren’t many better ideas than teaming up with one of the largest brands in America.
More recently, Google made waves when it dropped an ad for the Home featuring “Home Alone” star Macaulay Culkin, who recreates scenes from his classic film. In the ad, Culkin uses his Google Home to set a reminder to clean the sheets as he’s jumping on the bed, and to alert him when the pizza delivery man arrives.
The spot has been an astounding success, generating tons of headlines and 7.7 million YouTube views in its first day.
“Alexa” still seems to be the buzzword in virtual assistance. But if Google has anything to say about it, the market battle will be hard fought.
