Green Book Takes the Prize at 91st Academy Awards

March 1, 2019

Another year of film is officially in the books, now that the 91st Academy Awards have come and gone. And this year, it was “Green Book” that won the night’s biggest honor.

The film, directed by Peter Farrelly and starring Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali, is based on a true story about a white man who works as a black pianist’s driver during the musician’s tour of the Deep South. It was the center of multiple awards on Oscar night in addition to Best Picture – Ali won a Best Actor in a Supporting Role award for his performance in “Green Book”, and the writing team took home the Best Original Screenplay prize.

Not everyone was pleased about the film’s success. Spike Lee, for example, made a splash by reacting critically to the Best Picture announcement, as the heart-warming “Green Book” has been criticized for simplifying race issues.

But luckily, diversity was rewarded in other ways. Marvel’s “Black Panther” earned a bunch of awards, including Best Original Score, Best Costume Design, and Best Production Design. And Lee was awarded with the Best Adapted Screenplay prize for his film “BlacKkKlansmen”, marking his first Oscar win.

Other notable wins included Alfonso Cuarón as Best Director for “Roma”, Rami Malek as Best Actor in a Leading Role for “Bohemian Rhapsody”, Oliva Coleman as Best Actress in a Leading Role for “The Favourite”, and Regina King as Best Actress in a Supporting Role for “If Beale Street Could Talk”.
