Award shows are notorious for their awkward presenters (cue the crickets after a flopped joke) interesting fashion choices and in the case of the VMAs – wild musical performances.
MTV’s VMAs took place on August 20that Radio City Music Hall marking the 35th video music award ceremony. Like any show of this kind, there were some definite highlights. And an equal (if not more!) amount of lowlights. Rolling Stone ranked the best and worst parts of the night here.
The list labels Jennifer Lopez’s performance as the peak of the night, with Ariana Grande’s show stopping “God is a Woman” and Shawn Mendes rendition of “In My Blood” following with some of the best parts of the night. J.LO took home the biggest award of the night after putting on the show of a lifetime. A “dazzling, epic performance. The 49-year-old Nuyorican icon took to the stage Monday night in blue-and-gold brocade, powering through no fewer than a dozen hits, from 1999’s “Waiting for Tonight” to 2018’s “Dinero,” with snazzy choreography and set changes aplenty.”
On the other end of the spectrum, the flops included Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish’s lackluster jokes, Madonna’s long-winded (and self indulgent) tribute to the late Aretha Franklin and Post Malone and Aerosmith’s crossover complete the list as the dullest parts of the night.
