238 suitors came out pitching to be Amazon’s second home – Amazon HQ2. The bids came from across the continent in response to Amazon’s proposal saying that the company is looking for a metro area with at least one million residents, proximity to an international airport, mass transit, quality higher education, an educated workforce, a business-friendly environment and amenities that give the company the potential to attract and retain strong technical talent. More than $5 billion in construction spending is going to build its second headquarters and high-paying tech jobs that will hopefully generate tens of thousands of additional jobs and billions of dollars in potential investments. Amazon is capitalizing on this free publicity by adding incentives, “the process has sparked criticism of Amazon’s request that applicants include tax breaks and other incentives available to sweeten their proposals, derided by some form of corporate welfare. New Jersey has floated the idea of providing $7 billion in state and city tax incentives to bring Amazon to Newark.” New York City lit its iconic skyscrapers orange, the color of Amazon’s logo, to attract Amazon. While there are many pros and cons to opening a second headquarters, many people are interested in Amazon moving in and bringing in almost 50,000 new jobs. We’ll have to see who takes home this prime position.
