ITT Closes Its Doors and Leaves Its Students In Limbo

September 30, 2016

After fifty years, ITT Technical Institute closes its doors of more than 130 campuses without warning. What does this mean for its 35,000+ students? In a press release, the company pointed blame at the U.S. Department of Education’s shutdown. For several years a group of attorneys had been looking into allegations that ITT misled their students about future job prospects and accepted unqualified students. Ironically after closing its doors, Steve Gunderson (President of Career Education Colleges and Universities), admitted “this sector grew too fast and too much during the recession. We practiced open enrollment and admitted students even if they weren’t academically prepared”. Unfortunately this admission does not help the thousands of students who have two difficult choices. The students can either walk away from their outstanding loans or choose a simple transfer credit. Majority of students at ITT and other for-profit schools paid for their education by federally backed and private student loans, typically a long and large financial burden. Unarguably, this is a very tough decision for a young adult to make during an already challenging time. And it prompts a larger question, is this the demise of the vocational and technical industry?
