Fans of Jordan Peele’s directorial debut “Get Out” have been anticipating his follow-up for over a year now. For them, and for Peele himself, it was worth the wait.
“Us”, Peele’s newest horror/social commentary film, raked in historic amounts of money last weekend in its debut. The box office data is absolutely staggering: with over $70 million earned in its opening weekend, the film shattered records, becoming the highest grossing U.S. opening for an original R-rated movie and the highest grossing U.S. opening for a horror movie of any rating.
And it certainly wasn’t all about hype. The film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 95%, thanks to a uniquely disturbing story and standout performances from Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke, and Elisabeth Moss.
When you look at the money and the reviews, it’s impossible to view “Us” as anything but a major success. Next stop: Academy Awards?
