Ever seen pictures of Coober Pedy? It’s a tiny South Australian town situated on a harsh barren desert. What’s different about Coober Pedy? At a glance, it looks like there’s no town at all, but after closer inspection you may notice entrances and airshafts to hundreds of subterranean homes. There is almost never rain and the bright cloudless skies come with temperatures over 105 degrees. The result is a town that feels like it belongs in a Sci-Fi movie. Think Frank Herbert’s Dune. While Coober Pedy was established as the world’s largest producer of gem-quality opals, it’s now becoming a favorite destination for the adventurous traveler. There are underground hotels, shopping and nightlife and if that’s not enough, there’s night golfing with glow in the dark golf balls. Totally weird or totally fun, that depends on what you look for in a vacation.
