Last spring the Dutch non-profit, Mars One, asked “Does anyone want to take a one-way trip to Mars?” and over 78,000 people said “Yes!” by applying for their proposed 2027 mission. Now NASA has taken the next step in preparation for a Mars mission by conducting a yearlong simulation. The international crew made up of an astro-biologist, a physicist, a pilot, an architect, a doctor/journalist and a soil scientist will live in a cramped dome on a barren plateau in Hawaii. While most experiments pertaining to life in space focus on the mechanics and science behind space travel, this experiment is centered on human interaction in isolated quarters for a long period of time. Living in such an intense environment will inevitably create conflict and the real test will be to see if the crew can resolve their issues. The results could determine whether or not pursuing life on Mars is a viable option. How will they do, time will tell.
