Lonely Planet’s Youthful Makeover.

April 3, 2014

Have you ever thumbed through a Lonely Planet travel guide? Almost everyone has, they’re the largest publisher of guide books in the world. In 2013, billionaire Brad Kelley shelled out a reported $80 million for the Australian based company and, to the surprise of many, put a 25-year-old named Daniel Houghton at the helm. Just two years earlier, Houghton was armed with little more than entry-level photo journalism experience and a love of photography when he received a fate changing phone call from a “local businessman” who liked the work on his website. By the end of their meeting, the businessman, AKA Kelley, made Houghton an offer: Keep doing what you’re doing, but work for me. It was a handshake agreement, no contract. He never asked Houghton his age. Fast forward, Houghton has been tasked with Lonely Planet’s exciting new revamp. What can we expect? A greater digital experience and some great photography.
