Megyn Kelly launched “Megyn Kelly Today” this week, premiering her new talk show and new image. On her first show, she introduced herself to viewers as a mix between an Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres, a stark difference from her Fox News anchor image. But the entire show seemed very unfocused. Kelly promised a politic-free zone – right when, quite honestly, the only thing people are talking about is politics. “If my producers and I do our jobs, you will find out what you need to know today to get yourselves through the day,” Kelly said. But when the headlines are consumed by the threat of a North Korean nuclear attack, climate change deniers, healthcare and Kelly’s promoting a light-hearted show, there’s a disconnect. Kelly told the New York Times that this is the show she was born to do. Based on first impressions, Kelly is working too hard at being herself. She is more known to be a polished interviewer versus kicking off the show by giving a brief narrative about herself, including the loss of her father as a teenager and motherhood experiences. Although it was touching, it didn’t feel authentic. It’s just hard to reconcile the dismissive and alarmist Kelly from Fox News with the ‘Will & Grace’ superfan. We are left with a couple questions, who is Megyn Kelly and what’s the point of all this?
