If you’ve seen the film HUGO you’ve probably been exposed to the wonder and vision of an early film maker named Georges Melies. The film orchestrates a fictional relationship between Melies and a young boy, who helps him rediscover his love of the moving image.
In real life Mieles was the visionary that he is portrayed as in the film, making over 531 films. One of the featured films in the movie was Le Voyage Dans La Lune, (A Trip to the Moon). The film was rediscovered back in 1993 by archivists in Barcelona, and they’ve been painstakingly repairing the film. They asked the duo of Air, Nicolas Godin and Jean-Benoit Dunckel to create a new modern soundtrack.
The result is a beautiful and at times eerie translation of the century old visuals. Have a look above for an excerpt. The full score and film will be featured at Cannes in May.
