Money Grows in the Minds of Artists

November 18, 2014

With how far we have come in technology it’s easy to think that making counterfeit money would be a breeze. But – it’s not as easy as you think! Banks from around the world are commissioning artists to create bank notes that are esthetically pleasing but also hard to re-create. Included in the designs are further security elements that provide anti-counterfeit measurements. Thomas Hockenhull, the curator of the British Museum’s Modern Money Collection, is weary of the artistic features of the some of the new currency creations. He does however note, that art in addition to security features make forgery quite a bit more difficult. Banks have even gone as far as changing the bill medium to a polymer plastic that is harder to recreate in effort to minimize criminal activity with re-creation. Take a look at CNN’s ten examples of some of the new bills and tell us what you think. Soon we’ll all be carrying around an art gallery in our pockets!
