Did you know there’s a culture of musicians out there who create machines that use marbles to produce music? We didn’t and neither did Martin Molen, a Swedish musician, who was so intrigued, he set out to create his own marble music machine.
The two-month project turned past the fourteen-month mark and it’s still on going. His creation, The Wintergartan Marble Machine, is a programmable music box that plays the drums, bass, vibraphone and other instruments by using a crank and 2,000 marbles. The Wintergarten is unique in its controllability.
The machine is hand made with many wooden parts, tracks, pulleys and funnels that collect the marbles. When it’s complete Martin plans to create smaller versions that are easier to move and tour. It’s a work of art that can only be appreciated fully by seeing it in action, so check it out on Wired.co.uk.
