New York’s Latest Color-filled Hit

August 29, 2013

Now through September 5, why not head to the Guggenheim and enjoy color like you’re never seen it before. John Turrell, a leading member of the light and space generation of artists has taken over Frank Lloyd Wright’s famous atrium and has flooded it with light. Well, not exactly Wright’s architecture. Turrell has constructed a hollow cone of white fabric ovals, much like looking up into an enormous six-story mold for a multi-tiered wedding cake. Visitors are invited to sit back, and even lay on the floor to contemplate the epic space as lights gradually shift from one gradated color to another, while muted natural light filters in through the skylight. How often will we get a chance to lay on the floor at the Guggenheim without medics rushing to our aid?
