Ever gone swimming in November? It may sound like a unique idea, but it is not what the people of Venice were hoping to do this month. High waters devastated the city this past month, the worst flooding they have seen in 50 years.
Last week, the mayor called for a state of emergency as the city continued to go underwater. The damage they are facing is huge, hundreds-of-millions-of-euros huge. This flooding was the second-highest in history, coming just short to the flood of 1966.
Many have been advised to not visit as Venice attempts to get back on its feet. The frequency of these rising floods has become a concern to many, and the mayor blames it on climate change. The reason aside, they will need to put in major work to help protect this sinking city. Thoughts and prayers go towards Venice during this season.
