Shaun White, Chloe Kim, Mikaela Shiffrin are the names we’ve been hearing throughout the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang and names winning gold. Shaun White reclaimed his Olympic halfpipe title and won the United States’ 100th all-time gold medal, Chloe Kim delivered a stunning performance, doing tricks no other woman in her sport could do. Mikaela Shiffrin lived up to her hype winning gold despite multiple weather delays. And the ratings have been winning gold too, surpassing all expectations. “We are on a pace right now where the inventory we held aside for potential under-delivery of our estimates is not going to be needed,” said NBC’s Lazarus. The prime-time coverage is being watched by an average of 23.8 million viewers. The network is seeing a massive increase in streaming of the Olympic games, through digital devices and internet-connected televisions. Viewers have watched more Olympic coverage on digital devices in the first five days of the Pyeongchang Games than in the entire Sochi Games. White, Kim and Shiffrin are certainly rating helpers. White’s gold medal win in the men’s snowboarding halfpipe event set a new high in the Nielsen ratings. Regardless of how the Olympics are watched, they are being watched with great praise.
