Kanye West “feels like he’s under a spiritual attack”. Mic Drop. The controversial rapper was hospitalized for exhaustion before the Thanksgiving holiday and canceled the remaining dates of his Saint Pablo tour. “It’s not just the big things; it’s the smaller, quieter things, internal things”, an unidentified source has said of West’s state of mind. But prior to his hospitalization, West’s public breakdowns and here’s what I have to say rants have opened a conversation about mental health, fame, and even hip-hop music. Recently, we’ve seen more hip-hop artists speaking openly about their mental health struggles through their music and social media platforms. Years ago, Eminem narrated his own story about his inner demons and journey to sobriety in the best selling album of 2010, Recovery. Rapper Kid Cudi used his Facebook page to announce to his fans that he was voluntarily checking himself into rehabilitation for his battles with anxiety and depression. And with West, his struggles shouldn’t come as that much of a surprise. The megastar frequently uses Twitter to go on jaw dropping outbursts, he rambles on most interviews about his stream-of-consciousness, and has (remember the 2009 Taylor Swift incident?) stormed award-show stages. So is this recent news another publicity stunt or a cry for help?
