Sometimes, something as simple as buying a few donuts can change someone’s day. A California donut shop has been a staple of the Seal Beach town for just about 30 years. “”Every Sunday for 20 years, we’ve been purchasing doughnuts,” said Jenee Rogers, another long-time customer. “It’s one of the few things that’s still here. He makes them fresh and brings them right there in the mornings. It’s a real American dream for them.”
Patrons have been heading to the bake shop for years to get their favorite sweets. But now, after the owners were dealt a difficult medical situation, the customers have decided to return the favor. John and Stella Chhan have spent their lives creating the treats when Stella had a brain aneurysm in October.
With the news, John thought he’d have to continue to head to work daily and live Stella alone – but their loyal customers weren’t going to let that happen. By 7:30 am, the donuts trays are empty and John can head home to see his wife.
“The Chhans have worked hard for their piece of the dream on their own, and specifically asked that no crowdfunding sites be set up on their behalf. So, the customers decided to do what they’ve always done, just a little earlier in the morning: head to the Chhan’s shop, buy the doughnuts and spread the sweetness.” It just goes to show sometimes a small act of kindness goes a very long way.
