Many celebrities have noticed that Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut “Booksmart” has performed poorly at the box office so far, despite drawing rave reviews from critics and fans. In an attempt to support Wilde and female filmmakers as a whole, they’ve taken to social media, using their platforms to encourage us all to go see the movie.
Taylor Swift, Ryan Reynolds, Natalie Portman and Mindy Kaling are among the many famous names who have so far voiced their support for the film. Some have been upfront about the importance of supporting women-led film projects like this one (including Lili Reinhart), while others have simply stated how much they love the movie.
The film centers around two teenaged girls who are graduating from high school; their academic careers have been largely spent studying, and now they want to make up for lost time by living it up before college. While it doesn’t necessarily sound like a social justice movie, the fact that it’s directed by a woman in a male-dominated landscape has made its lack of popularity a cultural story.
The distribution team behind “Booksmart” is adamant in its belief that the movie will succeed as the summer goes on. We hope they’re right, but either way, it’s great to see big names rallying around the cause.
