$70.3 million for a high school football stadium probably sounds absurd to many, but not for most Texans. Back in 2016, in our “Leisure” Issue, we discussed how high school football is king in Texas and how there is no holds barred. In our blog, we mentioned how Katy, Texas was preparing to build the mecca of all high school football stadiums. Well, it has finally been revealed. The Legacy Stadium, which seats 12,000 people, has a two-story field house, a video replay board that costs $2 million, spread across 43 acres, 2,600-sqaure-foot-locker rooms, is the most expensive high school football stadium ever built. “Katy is all about our school, our community, and this is going to serve Katy. It’s going to serve this area of Texas for my entire lifetime and I couldn’t be more prouder of it,” a resident enthusiastically said. The district has more than 70,000 students and the stadium will be shared by eight local high schools and was voted on and paid for by taxpayers in the area. Of course, questions surrounding budget priorities arose. Tens of millions of dollars were spent on a high school stadium, when some school districts struggle to pay for things like seat belts on buses to keep kids safe in the state. Despite some controversy, Katy residents are confident this stadium will benefit Katy and its surrounding communities in more ways than one; they are even predicting the Legacy to bring in $500,000 in revenue each year. Simply, everything is just bigger in Texas!
