The Documentary That Gets It Right

July 7, 2015

It’s been said that if a documentary has a sufficiently electrifying subject and the bulk of the picture consists of archival footage, then you pretty much can’t lose. With an 8/10 on IMDB and an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it looks like the legendary singer and civil rights activist, Nina Simone, has another hit on her hands, albeit post-mortem. The project’s executive producer Lisa Simone Kelly couldn’t be happier. Did we mention she’s Simone’s daughter? According to Kelly, the Netflix documentary, released last week, accurately captures her mother’s tale and sets the bar for all future Nina Simone projects. This relentless quest for accuracy stems from fear that the upcoming Hollywood offering, Nina might be less than truthful, especially considering the choice to cast Avatar beauty, Zoe Saldana in the lead roll, an ill received decision among bloggers. Time will tell if Nina stays true to Simone’s experience, but in the meantime we can be sure that Lisa Simone Kelly has a hit on her hands and her stake in the ground.
