The U.S women’s gymnastics team huddled together and cheered in unison, “We are the Final Five!” after winning gold in Rio. The Final Five is made up of Olympic veterans Aly Raisman (team captain) and Gabby Douglas, and newcomers Madison Kocian, Laurie Hernandez, and Simone Biles. The U.S team has had an unbreakable habit of winning with two consecutive Olympic gold medals and world championship titles. “We are going in as the best team in the world,” Raisman said in a pre-Olympic interview. “You know, you walk in like you’re number one and I think that’s intimidating to everyone else”. The girls hit 12 for 12 routines and triumphed by 8.209 points over Russia and 8.894 over China. Rio will be the last Olympics for the five-member gymnastics team. Moving forward, teams will only have four members. The girls choose their nickname strategically because of the retirement of Martha Karolyi, an Olympian coach legend. Karolyi was the head coach of the Magnificent Seven and the national team coordinator of the U.S women’s gymnastics since 2001. “I always tell the girls, we’re competing against ourselves. We want to come as close as possible to perfection,” Karolyi said. We believe The Final Five was Olympic perfection.
