Dr. Frank-N-Furter. Riff Raff. Magenta. Brad. Janet. Rocky. Names/ characters/personas directly tied to the cult-classic phenomenon that has reached generation after generation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The 1975 musical comedy horror film has remained a cult marvel since its debut and has been featured in a number of films and television shows over the years. Fox Broadcasting Company announced that they would be remaking the film for television starring Laverne Cox as Dr. Frank-N-Furter, which was originated by Tim Curry. Curry gave his blessing on the remake by playing the narrator. Director Kenny Ortega’s (Hocus Pocus and Michael Jackson’s This Is It) remake came at the ‘right’ time. Themes like transcendence, transformation, and liberation are very relatable today, even though the sexual politics are largely less jarring than they were in 1975. The television event featured standout performances from both Laverne Cox and Reeve Carney. Carney’s strangely alike take on Riff Raff helped bring familiarity to the remake, but still couldn’t save it from its disappointing ratings. The show has been (and will continue to be) a cult classic; after all, “don’t dream it – be it” is timeless.
