We blogged about the #MeToo movement in our October 20th issue and proposed to our readers that hopefully this would be a wakeup call for us all. Well, a story that rapidly became a movement, surely was. Time magazine has named ‘The Silence Breakers’ its person of the year for 2017, referring to those women, and the global conversation they have started. The #MeToo movement was the fastest-moving social change in decades and it all began with individual acts of courage. Naming ‘The Silence Breakers’ as the magazine’s prestigious annual title was a testament to the enormity of this movement. Then when the story took down morning television’s most charming host, Matt Lauer, we witnessed the door open even wider for the victims. “The number of people sharing their stories with me is so intense, especially since all of this is incredibly triggering for me as well,” Rose McGowan (who settled with Weinstein in 1997 after accusing him of sexual harassment) told Time. “People forget a lot that there’s a human behind this, someone who is very hurt.” The magazine interviewed dozens of women and men who have experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. Some of the victims didn’t want to be recognized in the magazine, but more importantly, they were a part of all the voices that launched this historic movement.
