The Supermarket That Sells Waste Food.

April 12, 2016

Denmark’s WeFood opened a grocery that sells surplus food and it’s a hit. The store, run by volunteers, sells only “food past its sell by date, with prices up to 50 percent cheaper than in normal shops.” WeFood rescues fruit and veggies that have had a bumpy ride in the loading truck, treats for a holiday that happened last week, plain white rice mislabeled as basmati, or anything nearing its expiration date. The response has been so great that WeFood could barely get their doors opened last month before business skyrocketed. When you get right down to it, most cultures produce overages of everything, so why not save food, effort and waste? Hopefully WeFood’s success will encourage food salvaging around the world, and in Connecticut too.
