All scholarships may as well be gold, given the high costs of college tuition. But when a scholarship makes history and inspires people around the world, it’s even more valuable. That’s what Toni Harris is learning now, as she just became the first female to earn a football scholarship at a four-year university.
Harris recently signed a letter of intent to play football for Central Methodist University. CMU wasn’t the only school that wanted the trailblazing star; she had offers from multiple schools before making her decision.
And her story is inspirational for more reasons than just the ones at the surface. Harris has persevered through quite a bit in her life, including a battle with ovarian cancer as an 18-year old.
It isn’t Harris’ first time in the limelight. She was recently featured in a Super Bowl ad from Toyota that highlighted her story. And obviously, she hopes this isn’t the peak of her fame – her intent is to someday become the first female player in the NFL.
The scholarship will certainly mean a lot to her, but the knowledge that she’s inspiring young female athletes around the country will certainly mean even more.
