United in a Sea of Black

“Who are you wearing?” has been asked at every award show since Joan Rivers coined the phrase as a red-carpet staple. However, during the 75th Golden Globe Awards, the interviewers did not ask who they were wearing, but why they were wearing black. Hollywood’s elite collectively decided to all wear black in solidarity for women’s rights. The ceremony was no longer focused solely on who the famous individuals wore, but why. “While the dresses and jumpsuits donned by invited celebrities were accessorized, often, with striking accessories and glittering jewels—a black dress can, on top of everything else, serve as a canvas for other forms of wearable art—the accessories most in demand were words.” There was a different energy during these awards, a collective feeling that these celebrities were demanding change. Michelle Williams shared, “we actually have the opportunity to hand our children a different world.” Actress Uzo Aduba said she wore black, “because the numbers don’t lie. Because tomorrow is too far. Because your fight is my fight. Because enough is enough. Because it’s time.” Finally, Jessica Chastain summarized the core of the movement by stating, “I wear black to stand in solidarity with my sisters and to say it’s #TimesUp on this imbalance of power IN ALL INDUSTRIES.” The black gowns, the pins and the foundation all signify a change in history, not just for those in entertainment but for women of all ages, colors and creeds.
