The screen world is its own. It can be agonizing and overwhelming, but also connecting. Even before these times, researchers imagined a different approach to technology – tangible interfaces. Tangible interfaces are interfaces that have broken out of the screen and live with us; in this quarantined world, it could be a technology treasure. A screen is an imperfected solution to the problem of productivity, but what if we had ‘calm technology’. Calm technology can sit in your periphery unnoticed, built into our environment. Its main goal is to figure out how, in a time of technology being everywhere, technologists could build hardware and software that demanded less of our attention. And as the world slowly returns to a new normal, calm technology would be essential to adjusting to a world passed a computer screen.
