Remember those orange “Gates” that appeared in New York’s Central Park in the summer of 2005? They were the work of the Christo and his long time partner Jeanne-Claude. Sadly, the couple’s projects were put on hold when Jeanne-Claude passed away from a brain aneurysm in 2009, but now Christo is ready to get back to work. What this time? For 16 days starting June 18, on Lake Iseo in Northern Italy, the public will be able to walk for nearly two miles on water, atop 200,000 floatable cubes covered in glittering, yellow fabric. “They will feel the movement of the water under foot,” Christo said. “It will be very sexy, a bit like walking on a water bed.” Given the magical feeling and ephemeral nature of Christo’s installations, this news has us yearning for a spring fling to Italy.
