In a world full of chaos and carnage, alas we have some good news – Sono the seal pup has been born.
The Maritime Aquarium – a longtime staple of South Norwalk (where Sono gets his name from) and Fairfield County culture since 1988 – announced in a press release on May 1 that a male harbor seal pup was born at their facility on April 5 at 11:36 PM, and that both the pup and mom, Gracie, were doing well and receiving excellent care from the Aquarium staff.
“This is an exciting time for all of us at the Maritime Aquarium,” said Rachel Stein, the Aquarium’s Associate Director of Animal Husbandry. “(Our staff) has been working day and night to make sure Gracie and her pup are receiving the best possible care.”
It does not get cuter than this folks!
Sono was pumped out at 18 pounds, 2 ounces, and was measured 30 inches at birth, and since had been gaining 15 pounds a day – impressive numbers to say the least.
What makes Sono even more special, is that he is the first harbor seal pup to be born at the Maritime Aquarium since 1989 – and the first male pup to be born at the facility in their 35 year history – truly one of a kind.
Come May 7, just a month after his birth, Sono moved with his mom Gracie into Pinniped Cove, the Aquarium’s 160,000 gallon viewing tank, and began getting comfortable in his new home, swimming around and exploring the caves and alcoves.
If you want to check in on Sono and see his cuteness in person, the Maritime Aquarium will continue to hold their seal training demonstrations at 11:30 AM, 1:30 PM, and 3:30 PM every day!
